TOPSHAM — George Naum, 90, a resident of The Highlands in Topsham, passed away peacefully Sunday, Sept. 24, with his loving family by his side.

He was born in Auburn on Jan. 25, 1927, the son of Albanian immigrant parents, Louis and Taso (Pappas) Naum.

As a young child, George made lifelong friends at the YMCA in Auburn, and fondly recalled many summer days spent at the East Auburn Gate House swimming and riding his bike. He was also a Sun Journal paperboy.

He graduated from Edward Little High School where he lettered in baseball, football and basketball and continued playing baseball for local leagues. He also volunteered at the Auburn Fire Department.

In 1945, he joined the United States Navy and was a member of the Plank Crew aboard the USS Allagash, an oil tanker servicing the Atlantic Ocean fleets during the final year of World War II. Following the war, in 1949, he married Claire Campagna and they celebrated 68 years of marriage. He began his 35-year career with Central Maine Power Company in 1950 and in 1984 retired as a line supervisor. George was a lifetime member of the Elks.

During retirement, George and Claire enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Canada. His hobbies included bowling, golf and lap swimming, and he was always proud of the house he built and the yard he maintained. He surrounded himself with family and making wonderful memories. His years with his grandchildren were a gift to him, and all of his children’s accomplishments were a great source of pride.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister, Althea Austin; and by three children, his daughter, Cheryl Naum, son, Jeffrey Naum and his wife, Susan Naum, and daughter, Lisa Naum Best and her husband, Frederick A. Best Jr. He was a proud grandfather of six, Alecia Mercer, Claire Hansen, Jacob and Caitlin Naum and Cameron and Blair Best. He also has four great-grandchildren, Jason and Stephanie Mercer and Riley and Alya Hansen.

The family would like to thank the staff at The Highlands Governor King wing and CHANS Home Health & Hospice for their dedicated and loving care toward George.
