Members of the committee on accounts say the Lewiston fire police don’t exist, and therefore no one claiming to hold that office will receive any pay. “The fire police are always pretty much of a joke anyway,” said one of the Aldermen, yesterday, “but this year none was appointed, and Mayor Lemaire’s contention that they hold over from the previous year doesn’t go with me for a minute. Too many things are of the ‘hold over’ type with the Mayor,” he concluded.

50 years ago, 1967

25 years ago, 1992
The City of Auburn has chosen a contractor for a selective cutting of the woods of Mount Apatite which should net the city $184,600. Logger Lawrence Peaco of New Gloucester won the contract after submitting the highest bid among 10 loggers. He will begin selective harvesting on more than 200 acres Oct. 5. Most of the trees will be red oak, though there are quantities of bird’s eye hard maple and regular maples. The cutting will remove timber from the recreational trail routes and will improve views of Taylor Pond from the mountain. The money will be used to develop the recreation area, which will include trails for running, hiking, bicycling, cross country skiing and snowmobiling, as well as bird-watching. The development plan calls for spending about $70,000 in the area bordered by Hatch, Garfield and Stevens Mill roads.
