JAY — A local man died and his grandson was injured when the ATV they were riding on rolled over and trapped them Saturday on Lucarelli Road, off Old Jay Hill Road, Police Chief Richard Caton IV said.

Thomas Fournier, 68, of Jay was deceased, he said. His grandson, Thomas Messer, 6, received injuries that were not life-threatening and was taken by a NorthStar EMS ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, Caton said.

A driver on the dead-end road came across the ATV on the side of the road just after 6 p.m., he said.

Speed did not appear to be a factor, Caton said. There is an old trail off Lucarelli Road, he said, but police are not sure if they had traveled on it.

“We really don’t know how it happened,” he said, and are still investigating to try and determine the cause.

Jay Police Cpl. Jeffrey Fournier and officers Michael Booker and Alex Burns were assisted by Livermore Falls Police Department, Jay Fire Rescue Department and Maine Warden Service.

The accident was reconstructed by the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, Caton said.
