FARMINGTON — The food court at Mt. Blue High School has a new feature this school year with the addition of a smoothie bar. With flavors such as Strawberry Banana, Berrylicious and Tropical, the smoothies have been popular — even more popular than Director of Food Services Andy Hutchins anticipated.

“We were only going to serve them two or three days a week,” he said. “But the students liked them so much that we’ve offered them every day.” Hutchins added that about one-third of the student breakfasts served are now smoothies, which contain milk, yogurt and fruit and can easily be taken to class if students are running late.

The smoothie bar was made possible by a Fuel Up to Play 60 grant for school nutrition equipment from the Maine Dairy & Nutrition Council. The organization is funded by the state’s dairy farmers.

On Sept. 21, former Mt. Blue student and recently crowned Maine Dairy Collegiate Princess Kristen Davis of Silver Valley Farm in New Sharon visited the school and had the opportunity to try her hand at making, serving and tasting the smoothies.

“I wish we had this when I was here,” said Davis, who graduated in 2016. “This is great.”
