DEAR SUN SPOTS: I’m hoping your readers might remember an old wooden building on Route 196 in Lisbon known as the “Corn Shop.” Corn and other vegetables from local farms were processed there. It was to the right and behind Angelo’s Pizza, to the left of the driveway that leads to a concrete block building that housed some old water pumps owned by Lisbon Water Department. My father, Dennett Jones, and my grandfather, Paul Frena, tore it down for the lumber in the late ’50s-early ’60s. I helped as much as a 9- or 10-year-old could. Nobody I have contacted remembers it, including the Lisbon Historical Society. Pictures or any information about when it was razed would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: As a follow-up to our recent announcement about this year’s shoe drive, the Lewiston-Auburn Kiwanis Club has a few more details to share with your fabulous readers.

We will conduct the shoe drive between now and Saturday, Nov. 11, to raise funds to help support community programs for local youth. The Key Clubs at both St. Dominic Academy and Lisbon High School are assisting the Kiwanis Club with the project.

Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used or even new shoes. If you have extra shoes in your closets, please box or bag them up. Our goal is 2,500 pairs of shoes! They can be dropped off at the following collection sites from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday-Friday: St. Dominic Academy, 121 Gracelawn Road, Auburn; St. Dominic Academy, 17 Baird Ave., Lewiston; Lisbon Community School, 33 Mill St., Lisbon; Lisbon High School, 2 Sugg Drive, Lisbon Falls; and L-A Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, 415 Lisbon St., Lewiston.

ANSWER: In conjunction with Funds2Orgs, the club will earn funds based on the total weight of the shoes collected. Donating shoes to the Kiwanis Club does make a difference in people’s lives. We hope readers will donate their shoes to help those less fortunate become self-sufficient and to also help the club raise funds for student scholarships, along with supporting several programs in the area that focus on children and youth.

After the collection, all donated shoes will be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of microenterprise partners in developing nations. Funds2Orgs helps impoverished people start, maintain and grow businesses in countries such as Haiti, Honduras and other nations in Central America and Africa. Proceeds from their shoe sales are used to feed, clothe and house their families.
