BELFAST, Northern Ireland — Tim Doherty had a goal and an assist as the University of Maine men’s hockey team beat Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 4-2 on Saturday in the consolation game of the 2017 Friendship Four Tournament.

Maine (5-7), which lost 3-0 to Providence in the opening round on Friday, also got goals from Brendan Robbins, Nolan Vesey and Mitchell Fossier. Freshman Jeremy Swayman made 18 saves for the win.

For RPI (2-9-3), Troy York and Jacob Hayhurst scored while Linden Marshall made 21 saves.

Robbins gave Maine a 1-0 lead at 13:56 of the first. Vesey helped Maine regain the lead at 2-1, scoring just 1:41 into the second. Mitchell Fossier’s goal just 35 seconds into the third gave Maine a two-goal lead. Hayhurst got RPI to within a goal before Doherty’s empty-net goal.

Women’s basketball

WPI 60, Bates 42

WORCESTER, Mass. — WPI pulled away in the second half to defeat the Bates women’s basketball team 60-42 on Saturday.

The Engineers led the Bobcats 27-25 at halftime, but WPI finished the third quarter with an 8-2 run to take a 10 point lead, and then added eight more points in the final period.

The Engineers (4-0) were lead by the double-doubles of Ama Biney (19 points and 10 rebounds) and Madison Beck (17 and 10).

WPI finished with 46 points in the paint to Bates’ 18.

Carly Christofi led the Bobcats (1-3) with 10 points. Nina Davenport finished with nine, and Melanie Binkhorst contributed eight.

Skye Conley, a freshman who played at Gray-New Gloucester, played five minutes for Bates and scored two points (the first of her college career), and grabbed a pair of rebounds.

Next up for the Bobcats is a road game against the University of New England on Monday.

Delaware Valley 37, Husson 15

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. — Quarterback Dashawn Darden threw for 319 yards and three touchdowns as Delaware Valley (12-0) beat Husson (10-2) 37-15 in the NCAA Division II tournament Saturday

The Aggies advance to face The College at Brockport in the quarterfinals.

John Smith ran for 161 yards and a touchdown for Husson.

Women’s hockey

Maine 2, Union 1

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Catherine Tufts scored with 3:12 left to give the University of Maine women’s hockey team (10-6-2) a 2-1 win over Union (3-9-2) on Saturday.

Daria Tereshkina put the Black Bears ahead 1-0 six minutes into the game.
