JAY — Selectpersons on Monday will consider accepting a federal grant that would provide the town with up to an estimated $125,000 over three years to fund an additional full-time police officer position.

The town would be responsible for 25 percent for three years and is required to fund the position for the full amount for a fourth year. The town’s cash match will be $91,854.

Selectpersons will take up the grant at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27, at the Town Office.

The board voted to submit the grant application in June to the U.S. Office of Community Oriented Policing Services for the 2017 COPS Hiring Program.

A detective position was eliminated as of July 1, after voters approved the Police Department budget April 25 in an effort to reduce the town budget. The town had to raise its second $1.33 million payment as part of a three-year tax settlement to Verso Androscoggin LLC. The final payment is due in 2018-19.

Former Detective Michael Mejia left the Police Department in September to take a position at the the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office in Auburn.

 There was  money in the budget to hire a part-time officer to cover for a full-time officer to do investigative work. The town had also previously eliminated an officer position in recent years.

“The town must commit to retaining its full force for throughout the grant period plus one year,” Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere said in June.

Selectpersons said then that if the town was awarded the grant, they would decide if they would move forward with it.

It’s a way of keeping the department staffed by having a grant that is paying a large part of the cost, LaFreniere said previously.
