NEW VINEYARD — Crews on Wednesday battled a chimney fire that spread to the walls of a home on High Street.

When the first fire crews arrived, they reported flames and smoke coming from the second floor of the single-family home at 2 High St.

No one was hurt in the 4 p.m. blaze, but a family of five was  burned out of their home.

Firefighters from more than a half dozen towns joined crews from New Vineyard at the scene. Police blocked off a section of Route 27 while the fire was being fought.

An hour after the fire was reported, the American Red Cross sent out a bulletin advising that they were assisting a family of five left homeless by the blaze.

A New Vineyard fire official said crews were clearing the scene at 5:30 p.m.

Firefighters from several towns, including Phillips, Farmington, New Sharon, Industry, Kingfield, Strong, Eustis and New Portland, assisted at the scene.
