LEWISTON — Edible Lisbon Street is continuing. Healthy Androscoggin has turned its summer Edible Lisbon Street planters into a Holiday Giving Train for the community.

The train, located outside Healthy Androscoggin’s office at 124 Lisbon St., is filled with nonperishable healthy foods that are available to everyone. The train’s concept of “Take a Meal — Leave a Meal” encourages individuals who want to help their neighbors address the issue of food insecurity to leave healthy food items in the train cars. Those suffering from the problem are encouraged to help themselves to the healthy options available in the train.

Healthy Androscoggin and a local Girl Scout troop provided the initial donations. As the season progresses, adding healthy, nutritious food items to the train allows everyone to spread a bit of joy throughout the community in a meaningful and helpful way.

Healthy Androscoggin suggests that donations be nonperishable, healthy options (whole-grain, low-salt, low sugar) packaged in waterproof containers cans, plastic or cardboard boxes in zip-lock bags. The train will be available through the holiday season and leftover food items will be distributed to local food pantries.

Financial donations are welcome and may be sent to Healthy Androscoggin, 300 Main St., Lewiston, ME 04240.
