PORTLAND (WGME) — A strong snowstorm will sweep across much of Maine on Christmas, with six to 12 inches expected along with cold temperatures and strong winds.

A blizzard warning has been issued for southern and central Maine including the Midcoast until 5 p.m.

Wind gusts could reach 50 miles, visibility will be extremely poor and much of the area can expect ix to nine inches more of snow until the storm passes.

Speeds on the Maine Turnpike and I-295 are down to 45 miles per hour. The snow has been falling for hours but is expected to intensify as the morning goes forward.

The storm is moving quickly, leading to a tapering of snow accumulation. The strong winds are blowing the light and fluffy snow around, making traveling conditions more hazardous.

The sun will return, perhaps as soon as late this afternoon but leading into a sunny but frigid week.
