LITCHFIELD — Maine State Police said a Sabattus man was killed Monday morning when his SUV struck a tree on Route 197 near Gowell’s Shop n’ Save.

Trooper Erin James said Michael Oliver, 67, was driving east when his Chevrolet Blazer crossed the centerline and hit a pine tree beside the opposite lane.

Oliver was alone and was not wearing his seat belt, according to a statement from state police.

James said it did not appear that road conditions played a role in the crash, which happened just after 6:30 a.m.
