For now, the last scheduled day of school in Lewiston and Auburn is Friday, June 15.

A snowstorm expected Wednesday could change that.

“Wednesday isn’t looking good,” Lewiston Superintendent Bill Webster said.

A winter storm watch is in effect for most of Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. Forecasters said they expect significant snowfall inland — between 6 inches and a foot — with the coast likely to see a mixture of snow and rain.

So far this winter, the Lewiston and Auburn school districts have used five snow days.

It’s worse in Sabattus area schools. “To date we have missed nine days,” RSU 4 Superintendent Andrew Carlton said in an email. Sabattus-Litchfield-Wales students did a make up date on Dec. 22, and March 23 will be a school day instead of a workshop day, Carlton said.

With those two days put back in the student school day calendar, the last day of school would be June 19 for students, he said. “I am keeping my fingers crossed that we don’t miss any more!”

If classes are canceled Wednesday, the end-of-year dismissal for Lewiston-Auburn students, now scheduled for June 15, would likely be extended to Monday, June 18 — with plenty of winter days remaining.

Webster has created a last-day-of-school counter on the Lewiston School Department’s webpage. The box on the left side of the page shows the last student day and how many days to go. As of Monday: 130 days.

According to the schools’ calendars, Edward Little High School in Auburn is set to graduate June 2 and Lewiston High School on June 8.

And once the schools’ graduation dates are set, they do not change. Seniors do not have to make up snow days, according to Auburn Superintendent Katy Grondin.

“They’ll be very happy,” she said.
