PARIS — A Buckfield man who allegedly attempted to set fire to a car at Tilton’s Market on Saturday night was arraigned Wednesday on a charge of arson.
Cody Kreworuka, 31, appeared in 11th District Court and had bail set at $200 cash, or personal recognizance with a pre-trial supervisory contract. He is barred from being on Tilton’s Market property.
According to an affidavit by Oxford County Deputy Stephen Witham, a passerby noticed a fire underneath a vehicle in the parking lot of the market on Turner Street on Saturday night. The store manager extinguished it and called police.
“Upon arrival, I observed charred newspaper and ashes in the left-hand side of the parking lot, (and) also observed the door to a vehicle in the parking lot that had heat and smoke damage,” Witham wrote.
Investigator Kenneth MacMaster of the State Fire Marshal’s Office discovered the fire was started by a “juice container filled with kerosene and ignited with newspaper.”
Witham wrote that security camera footage showed a man “entering the parking lot with a lit flaming device, tossing it between the vehicles and exiting the parking lot by crossing the road toward the fire station.”
Employees at Tilton’s Market told police there had been previous problems involving a neighbor to store.
Witham wrote that police identified the neighbor as Kreworuka and interviewed him at his residence.
“Once inside the residence, I detected a strong odor of heating fuel in the kitchen area,” Witham wrote. “While speaking with Kreworuka, I observed a kerosene heater in the kitchen, newspapers on the floor and juice bottles in a black milk crate sitting on the floor at the end of the kitchen counter.”
Kreworuka denied knowing anything about the fire, according to the affidavit.
On Tuesday, Witham and MacMaster got a search warrant for Kreworuka’s residence. During the search, they said, Kreworuka “admitted to the incident.”
He was arrested Tuesday on a charge of arson and taken to the Oxford County Jail in Paris. He was being held there Wednesday evening, a corrections officer said.
