DEAR SUN SPOTS: Volunteers are needed to give a helping hand to seniors in our communities. Imagine not talking or seeing another person for weeks or not being able to go out for groceries on your own. Imagine how it would feel to help change those circumstances for a senior by providing them with the support they need.

SEARCH (Seek Elderly Alone, Renew Courage & Hope) is a Catholic Charities Maine program. We are looking for families, singles, retirees, college and high school students to volunteer a few hours a week to seniors who need a helping hand. The SEARCH program is seeking volunteers to help provide companionship and assistance with grocery shopping and errands for our senior clients who live in Androscoggin County. We currently have seniors who are waiting for help in the Auburn, Lewiston, Lisbon, Sabattus and Turner areas.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer with us, or if you know of a senior person who is isolated and may need this kind of support, please contact our SEARCH Program Director, Wendy Russell, at 207-784-0157 or wrussell@ccmaine.org.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: The American Legion Post 24 in Rumford has contributed much to the River Valley area for decades. For example, we transport veterans to appointments, help with Memorial Day parades, and assist with boys’ and girls’ State activities. These days, Post 24 is at a crossroads. Leadership is becoming older and many are passing on. At 57 years of age, I am one of the youngest members at monthly meetings.

The Post needs some of its 400-plus members to step up and fill the post officer positions. Failure to do so could result in this post closing causing the area to lose a great asset. Please, if you are a member, join me in supporting the post by running for office. Contact the post at 207-369-9053. Monthly meetings are the first Sunday of each month at 6 p.m. with a social hour at 5 p.m.

—Edward, Rumford

ANSWER: I can’t stress enough how worthwhile it is to spend some time helping someone else in need or finding other ways to get involved in your community. Your efforts will be blessed and so many times, you receive much more than you give.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I’m looking for a five-gallon metal pail. Plastic will not do.

—Bruce, Livermore

ANSWER: I have seen galvanized metal pails of various sizes at hardware stores and feed stores. Try Tractor Supply Store at 1619 Lisbon St.(207-795-8828); Drillen True Value on 1086 Sabattus Road; (207-783-4600); and Paris Farmers Union at 671 Main St. in Lewiston (207-783-1366).
