Library hosting murder mystery fundraiser

MEXICO — The Mexico Public Library is hosting a murder mystery dinner, “Pasta, Passion & Pistols,” on Friday March 2.

Guests are invited to take on character roles and have an Italian-themed dinner, including appetizer platter, salad, homemade lasagna and garlic bread with ginger ale or water. Dessert will include tiramisu cake, chocolate creme-filled wafers and coffee.

The one to correctly guess who killed Pepi Roni will win a gift card good for a free coffee every Sunday in 2018. Space is limited. Dinner starts at 5 p.m. and the cost is $30 a person. Register at the Mexico Public Library or by calling 207-364-3281.

Cribbage Round Robin to decide local champion

RUMFORD —  The statewide Blizzard Buster Cribbage Tournament will start at noon Saturday, March 3, at Gatch’s.

Participants will play a nine-game Round Robin to determine the local winner. The local champion will get $50 and move on to the state championship on Saturday, March 31, at the Maine Mall and a chance for $1,500.

Knitting guild to hold swap, show and tell

PARIS — The Western Maine Knitting Guild will meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 6, at the Haskell House, First Congregational Church, East Main Street. This will be a yarn and knitting supplies swap.

There will be a show-and-tell segment, and those attending should bring their knitting for a knit and chat. Wear something green for St. Patrick’s Day.

If there is no school in the Oxford Hills School District due to weather conditions, the meeting will be canceled.

McLaughlin to host speaker in second lecture

PARIS — The 2018 McLaughlin Garden Lecture Series will continue on Wednesday, March 7, when Cindy Creps will present “Growing and Arranging Cut Flowers.” Illustrations will show the locally grown flowers in arrangements.

Creps has grown flowers for 16 years at Meadow Ridge Perennial Farm, 316 Back St., Hebron. She participates in the Deering Oaks Farmers’ Market and works with brides planning weddings. She began gardening as a young child in Orrington, working with her grandfather, who grew flowers and her parents, who grew vegetables.

For her talk she will discuss her favorite annual and perennial flowers that she uses in creating bouquets of cut flowers.

The illustrated lecture will begin at 4 p.m. upstairs in the Tribou home, 97 Main St., where Bernard McLaughlin lived with his wife. Tea will be served at 3:30. The lecture is free and open to the public. Parking is just to the north of Maurice’s; a driveway will be plowed.

Donations will be accepted for the preservation of the buildings and garden.

VFW post to meet on March 7

PARIS — The Floyd A. Harlow Jr. Post 9787, VFW, will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, at the post home, 58 East Main St.

RUMFORD — The Lithuanian Heritage Club will meet at noon Wednesday, March 7, at Sam’s, Route 2.

Daughters donate to veteran’s home

PARIS — Hannah F. Richardson Tent 19, Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865,  Stoneham, presented the annual holiday check to the Western Maine Veteran’s Home in Paris.

Accepting the check from President Marilyn Jones was Pat Paar, activity director for the home. Margaret Babineau, tent treasurer, and Carlene Gavin, secretary and first vice president of Tent 19, also attended.

Book Café to meet 

MEXICO — The Mexico Public Library Book Café, the adult reading group, will meet on the first Wednesday of each month from 5:45 to 7 p.m.
