LEWISTON — Fourth-ranked Middlebury scored the first seven goals of the contest and never looked back, defeating the Bates women’s lacrosse team 12-5 to open their season on Saturday.

Panthers goalie Julia Keith made nine saves, while Georgia Carroll paced the Panther attack with three goals and four assists. Emma Johns and Casey O’Neill caused three turnovers apiece for the Panthers.

The Bobcats (2-1) outshot Middlebury 26-24 but were held to 15 goals under their season average. Bates freshman Summer Dias scored three goals for her second hat trick of the season.

Bates will host Babson in a non-conference game Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Henry Riehl scored four goals and caused a team-high turnovers for Middlebury as the Panthers held off No. 14 Bates 11-10.

The Panthers took the lead for good when Riehl scored his fourth goal with 8:58 remaining in the third quarter to put them up 7-6. Despite being outshot 41-39, the Panthers were able to hold onto the win with the help of Michael McCormack’s two goals and two assists.

Matt Chiastawa scored four goals and notched three assists for the Bobcats in the loss, while Max Breshi added two goals.

The Bobcat’s next opponent is No. 2 Wesleyan on Saturday.

Men’s hockey

Maine 3, UNH 2

ORONO — The University of Maine won their second-consecutive game against the University of New Hampshire on Saturday, 3-2, winning the best-of-three matchup with UNH to advance to the second round of the Hockey East playoffs.

After the Wildcats got on the board first in the first period, Maine’s Mitchell Fossier scored to tie it 1-1. Later in the period Nolan Vesey made it 2-1 for the Black Bears.

Maine put the finishing touch on their win with a goal in the third from Eduards Tralmaks to make it 3-1. UNH would add a goal from Benton Maass to make it 3-2 but it wasn’t enough as the Wildcats are out of the playoffs.
