BOSTON — After Northeastern pulled off one upset victory a few hours before, Maine was hoping to prevent another.

No dice.

A late first-period tally from Northeastern stole momentum, and then another in the third sealed it as the Huskies upended Maine, 2-1, in the Hockey East semifinals at Matthews Arena on Saturday.

Maine toppled Boston University on home ice a week ago to advance to to the Hockey East semifinals, and the Black Bears took a 1-0 at the end of the first period.

“These were two really good opponents,” Black Bears coach Richard Reichenbach said. “We came out strong, and I thought we played our game,”

Freshman left winger Daria Tereshkina scored early, and the Bears controlled the first period. But with the minutes ticking down at the end of the fame, Veronika Pettry took a pass on an odd-player rush out of the penalty box. and slid it in to tie the game.

“We had a couple really good chances early on, and it seemed easy,” Reichenbach said. “But, they turned it on. We played a really good two periods.”

After a stalemate in the second period, Matti Hartman broke the tie with a rebound following a shot from McKenna Brand, and that score held.

Huskies goalie Aerin Frankel made 24 saves to stop the Black Bears. Maine shot 15 times in the third, and Frankel stopped all of them.

Carly Jackson made 25 saves in defeat. The Black Bears took five penalties, and the power plays wore down the defensive effort.

“She’s been a rock for us,” Reichenbach said. “She was really on fire in practice and I thought she held up really well, especially in the second.”

Northeastern will face an upstart Connecticut team that took down No. 1 Boston College in the Hockey East title game, while Maine’s season is likely over.

“We went up early and played our game,” Reichenbach said. “They tied it up and they were frustrated, and I wanted to see how they responded. They did well in the second period. The people returning are going to learn a lot.”
