JAY — A sugar shack and sap-boiling equipment were destroyed by fire Saturday night on Weston Heights in North Jay, Deputy Fire Chief Corey Leclerc said Monday.
“It was a total loss,” Leclerc said.
The cause is under investigation.
The 16- by 20-foot building is owned by Trevor Giroux, who had insurance on it. Sap was boiled earlier in the day but none was being boiled when the fire started, Leclerc said.
The shack was engulfed in flames when 16 firefighters from Jay responded to the site off Keep Road at 9:34 p.m.
