OTISFIELD — A barn and attached farmhouse at 37 Big Hill Road were leveled by fire Friday night.

Early reports were that those living there in the home escaped to safety after the barn was discovered ablaze at about 7:30 p.m. A short time later, it was reported that flames had spread to the home.

According to online sources, the home sits on six acres and was built in 1820.

Crews from Otisfield were joined by firefighters from more than a dozen towns, including Oxford, Norway, Casco, Waterford, Harrison and Bridgton.

Equipment was reportedly being sent from departments in Mechanic Falls, Naples and Raymond.

By 9 p.m., the home was still burning and manpower was requested of additional town fire departments, including Bridgton, Baldwin, Standish and Sebago.

Some crews were staging at Bolsters Mills village and walking to the fire scene with equipment.

Big Hill Road is off Bolsters Mills Road. The burning home is a short distance from Day’s Country Store. There was no answer there as the buildings were burning.

By 10 p.m., crews were still battling flames. Video taken at the scene showed the buildings completely engulfed, with only a few beams remaining of the barn. Flames were seen shooting from the windows of the attached home.

Otisfield Fire Chief Kyle Jordan was in command of the fire fighting effort.
