I am responding to a story (Sun Journal, March 13) that has circulated on the internet about Sabattus resident Leslie Gibson’s hateful words, posted on Twitter, about two students who survived the school shooting in Parkland, Florida. Gibson is a Republican candidate for Maine’s District 57 seat.

In the not so distant past, elected officials conducted themselves with civility, integrity and respect. The current political climate is negative, divisive and filled with fear and hate. That climate is mirrored in Gibson’s statements. His comments are not those of a mature adult.

He does not seem to understand that when he speaks in derogatory terms, it does not, in any way, reflect negatively on the students, but rather on himself.

Do the voters of that district want that kind of person representing them?
