Cal Thomas’ March 18 column arguing that climate science isn’t settled ends with an invitation to read a book that will make the reader an “informed climate change denier.” That is an oxymoron. Climate change is constant. The Earth experiences ice ages and periods of warm weather where no ice exists. That is settled science.

The Earth is currently experiencing a warmup. That, too, is settled science and you don’t need a textbook to confirm it, as there are plenty of signs around us.

The only thing that isn’t settled is whether human activity is responsible for the latest warmup. Scientific consensus is that it is, but a small minority of scientists continue to argue that human activity is not.

That is the nature of scientific debate. An overwhelming majority of scientists can support a theory that a minority does not.

If the Sun Journal wanted to represent the debate as it stands in scientific circles, for every article denying climate change, the rest of the paper would be given over to articles supporting it.
