Open ‘Mike’ Night Pickleball Scramble

FARMINGTON — An Open “Mike” Night Pickleball Scramble to benefit food pantries through United Way will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, April 27, at the Farmington Community Center.

Join family and friends of Mike Monahan at 5:30 p.m. for set-up of a scramble-style pickleball tournament in memory of Monahan. There is no registration fee to play, however donations will be collected for local food pantries in his name through United Way.

All games will have randomly assigned partners and opponents and will last 10 minutes. Players will score as many points as possible during their game, and the score at the end of the game will be added to the point total. Whoever has the most points accumulated by the end of the night wins.

Refreshments and snacks will be served. Those attending may contribute a dish or drink. For information or to register, call the center at 207-778-3464.

Club to hear about trip to Lithuania

RUMFORD — The Lithuanian Heritage Club will meet at noon Wednesday, May 2, at Sam’s Italian Shop, Route 2.

There will be a presentation on the club’s recent trip to Lithuania. Everyone is welcome.

MEXICO — The Mexico Public Library Book Cafe, the adult reading group, will meet on the first Wednesday of each month from 5:45 to 7 p.m.

New members are always welcome.

VFW post members to meet

PARIS — Members of Floyd A. Harlow Jr. Post 9787, VFW, will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, at the post home, 58 East Main St.

GREENWOOD — Former Crescent Park teacher and Albany Township native Norma Salway will discuss her new book, “The Attic & ME, History Uncovered in a Maine Attic,” at the Greenwood Historical Society meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 2. The group will convene at the Greenwood Town Hall, 270 Main St.

The book honors Salway’s parents and the engaged lifestyle they provided her and her three sisters living on the family farm in Albany Township during the 1940s and ’50s. A passion for attics and anything old cultivated a love of collecting, especially family artifacts.

The book is a collection of inspirational stories connected to her roots, in which outside physical play, interactions with nature, opportunities to “make do” inspiring thought and imagination provided the foundation of youth. Vintage black and white photos as well as color photos by photographer daughter, Kassi Gatchell, enhance the book.

Salway lives in Portland with her cat, Gusty, and volunteers at the ReStore for Habitat for Humanity.

Historical society to have meeting

HARRISON — The first meeting of the Harrison Historical Society for 2018 will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 2. There will be a finger food meal, and members are asked to bring a snack to share.

The farmhouse, barn and long shop will be open for informational tours.

Pine Tree Quilters Guild meeting

NORWAY — The Pine Needles chapter of the state Pine Tree Quilters Guild meets from 9 a.m. to noon Thursdays in the community room of the Norway Town Office, year-round.

Both hand and machine quilters are welcome.

There is a schedule of optional activities such as occasional road trips, group projects and monthly trips out for lunch.
