LIVERMORE FALLS — Transfer station Supervisor Bill Nichols recommended to selectmen Tuesday night that security cameras be installed to identify violators of station rules.

Nichols said non-recyclable materials are being thrown into the recycling bin, which is costing the town money.

EcoMaine recently charged an extra $250 for a “contaminated” load, he said.

Last year, the town spent $1,799 to haul its recyclables. This year, Nichols said, “we’re almost up to $900 right now.”

“I don’t know what the big deal is with single-sort recycling,” he said. “You throw everything in one bin. It doesn’t get much easier than that.”

He recommended security cameras be placed at the station to help the attendant identify violators. If that does not work, an extra attendant will be needed, he said.

“The attendant has been clamping down really hard,” he added. “We’ve caught people from out of town showing up.”

Another problem has been people leaving materials outside the transfer station when it is closed, Nichols said.

In other matters, selectmen discussed new equipment for the playground at the Livermore Falls Recreation Field.

Resident Tim Fournier asked why the town needed to spend the money on the playground, because there are other playgrounds nearby, and other facilities at the recreation field also need maintenance.

Selectman George Cummings said he was also concerned about facilities maintenance at the recreation field.

Tax Collector Dawn Young, who has been acting town manager in Stephen J. Gould’s absence for health reasons, said the town does the best it can with part-time help to maintain facilities.

Selectmen agreed to delay action on buying playground equipment until Gould returns.

Selectmen also voted Tuesday to:

• Approve a bid of $7,225 from LeClerc’s Carpentry to replace the sewer treatment plant roof.

• Set their next meeting for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 5.
