RANGELEY PLANTATION — A woman from Maine and Florida was injured Thursday when she fell asleep at the wheel, went off Bemis Road and struck a tree, according to Deputy Brad Scovil.

Janet Birkens, 87, complained of head and neck pain, and was taken to a hospital by a NorthStar EMS ambulance, according to Franklin County Chief Deputy Steven Lowell.

Birkens has a summer house in Rangeley Plantation and lives in winter in Vero Beach, Florida, according to Scovil.

The 2011 Jeep SUV driving was destroyed in the accident that occurred about noon.
