The founders of this nation, who risked all for liberty and justice, would turn over in their graves at the sentiment expressed by Roland Martin (“Protest on your own time,” June 2.)

I am all for employees following employers’ policies, but do we really want to apply this to a moment of shared respect for flag and country, turning it into a paid command performance devoid of all meaning?

Unlike Roseanne Barr’s infamous crotch-grabbing anthem performance of 1990, the athletes who take a knee are quietly assuming a stance of deep respect for all that we have been taught the flag should symbolize.

A nation that enforces gestures of obeisance to national symbols, rather than founding principles, has already strayed far from those principles and is in deep trouble.
