LISBON — After two straight unsuccessful shots at the 56th state House district seat, Scott Gaiason will not get another shot this year.

“I’m a little disappointed,” he said, to have fallen short in a Democratic primary against Martha Poliquin, a school nutrition director. Poliquin will take on Republican incumbent Rick Mason in the Nov. 6 general election.

Poliquin received 307 votes to Gaiason’s 243, according to Lisbon Town Clerk Twila Lycette.

Poliquin said her opponent “definitely worked hard and ran a good race.”

Gaiason said he was concerned that a funding glitch in Augusta could leave Poliquin, a Clean Election candidate, short of cash if the fund runs out of money on July 1, as some have warned.

Poliquin said she is not taking any chances. She said she intends to collect as many $5 contributions as she can in the next week so she can claim state campaign help.

Still, she said, she is going to have to run a “very frugal” campaign.

Poliquin, 62, has lived in Lisbon for more than three decades and raised three children, who attended public schools and graduated from Lisbon High School. In those years, she was a steady volunteer in the schools, a leader of both Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts groups.

She served on the Lisbon school board from 1995 to 2001, including several years as its chairwoman.

Poliquin has worked in the school nutrition field for 20 years.
