NEW GLOUCESTER — Harvey Price, the town’s part-time recreation director, thanked selectmen, town employees and volunteers for their support during his seven years of town service.
Price’s last day of work is July 12, after which he and his family plan to move to Ohio.
“Make sure we don’t lose ground, and consider in the future impact fees for funding a future community building,” Price said. “For me, that playground project (at the New Gloucester Fairgrounds) is my greatest achievement.”
Price has been the town’s first recreation director, working two days a week.
In other matters during the audience-participation part of the meeting, former selectman Stephen Hathorne addressed the board regarding the selectmen-election process following last Tuesday’s vote.
In a three-way race, incumbent Linda Chase and newcomer Karen Gilles won the two seats on the board beating Hathorne.
“When is my actual term done?” he asked. “I wanted to know what’s legal or not.”
He said that prior to 1997, newly elected board members would be sworn in on July 1.
Now, he was told that once the ballot box closes, winners elected are sworn in immediately.
“For me, this meeting after the election is illegal and can be challenged,” Hathorne said.
The board did not respond.
In other matters, Public Works Director Ted Shane said will review eight paving bids that the board opened.
The firms included Lane Construction Corp., Bangor; All State Asphalt, Windham; F.R. Carroll Inc., Limerick; Pike Industries, Westbrook; Crooker Construction LLC, Topsham; Glidden Paving and Excavation Inc., Gorham; Shaw Brothers of Gorham; and P&B Paving, Gray.
Two bids were opened for a dump body and sand spreader and plow gear from Viking Cives of Lewiston and H.P. Fairfield, Inc. of Scarborough.
A single bid was received from Industrial Protection Services of South Portland for self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) packs for the Fire Department. The board is expected to make a decision July 2.
Finally, the board made appointments for volunteers serving on town committees beginning July 1. Town employees were also appointed to their current posts effective July 1.
