RANGELEY — The Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust has acquired a popular parcel on the Magalloway River.

The parcel supports access to “Mailbox Pool,” home to wild brook trout and landlocked salmon, just one-mile downstream of Aziscohos Dam.

Initiated as a fundraising challenge for anglers by anglers, the effort expanded to include local businesses, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Trout Unlimited, Brookfield Renewable and the Rangeley Region Guides’ and Sportsmen’s Association.

Together with more than 125 individual donors and grants from the Maine Mountain Collaborative and Land For Maine’s Future (pending), the historic project has collectively raised approximately $90,000 in just over 90
days.

“Brookfield Renewable has always appreciated our relationship with RLHT and we are happy to support this most recent land acquisition. We are committed to being good stewards of the environment and active participants in the communities we operate in,” said Brookfield Renewable’s Vice President of Operations Thomas Uncher. “Through this acquisition, a Maine tradition will be protected and we are happy to play a role.”

“Having conserved thousands of acres that border native brook trout waters throughout the region, the Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust is proud to have collaborated with the many anglers, groups and businesses that made this project a reality,” Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust Executive Director David Miller said.

As with all Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust owned properties, a comprehensive management plan is being developed to ensure these objectives are met.

The Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3), experienced land trust whose mission is to conserve and steward the natural and historical resources of the Rangeley Lakes Region for the benefit of the community and future generations.
