University of Maine Cooperative Extension Oxford Hills Homeschool Robotics 4-H Team is back home after competing in the FIRST LEGO League California International Open held May 18 to 20 in Carlsbad, California.

Representing Maine were Nathan Cooper, age 14; Amber Lynch, age 15; Joshua Wessels, age 13; and Lucas Yates, age 13. The team received a ranking of ‘exemplary’ for their project solution addressing water pipes freezing and bursting in cold weather.

Event judges comments included, “Great problem analysis on existing solutions and how to improve it. Your innovative solution is unique and clear!” and “Great documentation and preparation for the future of the product! Great presentation and confident voices, very professional!” The team was also noted for their professionalism and programming strengths.

The team met with teams from all over the world including those from Mexico, South Korea, Uruguay, Japan and Sweden.
