Owen Young, 11, plants kale Wednesday in a community garden at Washburn Elementary School in Auburn. Young and Donna Flynn, a counselor with Spurwink, started the garden after Flynn saw vegetable beds on Lewiston’s Lisbon Street and in downtown Norway. Flynn said people can help themselves to the vegetables so long as they leave some for the next person. “It’s a great lesson for the kids and the neighborhood,” Flynn said. Young will be a sixth-grader at Washburn this fall. (Daryn Slover/Sun Journal)
