TURNER — The Board of Selectmen announced Monday evening that the town’s fiscal year ended $120,000 under budget June 30.
“It’s not a lot, it’s only about 1 percent under, but it’s still under,” board Chairman Kurt Youland said.
The 2017-18 budget was $9.1 million.
In other matters, the board announced a six-month moratorium on medical marijuana storefronts was passed by voters at a special town meeting last week.
The Legislature adopted an emergency measure to allow medical marijuana storefronts in communities that allow them.
Voters also approved turning the Turner Natural History Club property at 442 Turner Center Road over to the town.
Town Manager Kurt Shaub said a deed must be executed to make the transfer official. It has not been decided what the town will do with the property.
The club was founded in 1920 and is a repository of tens of thousands of seashells, and animal and plant specimens, among other items. The club voted to dissolve last summer because of declining membership. It’s not clear whether the collection is part of the acquisition.
Also at Monday’s meeting, Rescue Chief Lisa Bennett announced her department and Buckfield Rescue each raised $2,600 at a golf tournament at Turner Highlands Golf Course in June.
The board presented the Boston Post Cane to the town’s oldest resident, Roy Nickerson, who turned 98 on April 15. His family attended the recognition ceremony Monday night.
Rep. Jeff Timberlake took part, honoring Nickerson for his service in the House of Representatives from 1984-85 and 1993-98.
“Thank you for all this, I really appreciate it,” Nickerson said. “It’s not something I was looking forward to receiving, I don’t think anybody does, but you just make the most of the time you have.”
In 1909, The Boston Post sent out gold-headed ebony canes to 700 towns in New England to be presented to the oldest male resident of the town. Women became eligible in 1930. Turner has given the cane to 37 individuals since 1925.
The original cane is on display at the Town Hall. Honorees are given replicas.
