LIVERMORE FALLS (WGME) – A fire broke out Tuesday evening at a retired dentist’s home on Park Street.

The retired dentist says Tuesday couldn’t get any worse. Earlier, his sick wife died, and now his home caught fire.

He says he was inside with his sister-in-law when he smelled something funny, so they got out and called 911. Fortunately, they’re OK.

Fire officials say they were in the middle of their annual July 3 barbecue, when they got the call around 7 p.m.

Mutual aid was brought in from Livermore, Jay and Wilton to help.

Fire officials say there is significant damage to the inside of the structure.

The fire chief says some of the firefighters who responded Tuesday night know the former dentist. They say their hearts go out to him.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating what caused the fire. They believe it started on the second floor.
