TOPSHAM — Police said a 17-month-old Wiscasset girl suffered serious eye injuries from a dog attack Tuesday evening.

Topsham Police Sgt. Robert Ramsay said the injuries are not life-threatening.

The girl was at a home on Raymond Road with the dog’s owners, who often watch the child.

The 8-year-old boxer has been quarantined at Coastal Humane Society, police said, in accordance with state law.

The dog and child have spent time together since she was a newborn, and it’s not know why “but the dog went after the child,” Ramsay said.

There were no previous incidents with the dog and police hadn’t received any complaints about it, according to Ramsay. It did have a current rabies vaccination certificate, he said.

Because there is no history of problems with the dog, the incident is considered an accident by the District Attorney’s Office, the sergeant said.
