An autopsy conducted Saturday in a Hampden murder investigation has concluded that the victim died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds, Maine State Police said Saturday.

Philip Clark, 55, of 557 Kennebec Road in Hampden, was charged with murder Friday in the death of the woman who lived in the same building, according to police. Clark is being held at the Penobscot County Jail in Bangor and is expected to make an initial court appearance on Monday.

State police said they are not yet able to identify the victim.

“Because of some of the injuries positive identification cannot be made,” state police Lt. Troy Gardner said in a statement Saturday. “Detectives will be working with the (state medical examiner’s) office to assist in the process of making positive identification over the next couple of days.”

Court documents say Clark and the victim both lived in the building and their apartments were connected by a door to a common hallway, News Center Maine reported.

An arrest warrant was issued for Clark after he didn’t appear in court on Thursday on criminal trespassing charges

Members of the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit went to the home on Friday regarding a welfare check that was brought to their attention by the Hampden Police Department. After arriving at the scene on Friday, Clark, who was home at the time, was arrested.
