AUBURN — The York County Sheriff’s Office played a key role in the capture of a burglary suspect this week who has outstanding arrest warrants in nine states.

Sheriff William L. King Jr. said an investigation by his department and other law enforcement agencies led to the capture of 55-year-old Joseph Hodge of Jacksonville, Florida.

Hodge was arrested early Wednesday without incident at a motel in Auburn. He was charged with three counts of Class C burglary and is being held on $70,000 cash bail.

The investigation got underway Monday morning after York County deputies investigated three burglaries involving businesses in Cornish and Limington, according to a news release issued by King. The burglar forced entry into those businesses, stealing cash and other valuables.

During the course of their investigation, deputies learned that two other businesses in Standish in Cumberland County had been burglarized.

Using Facebook leads, video surveillance and interviews, deputies from York and Cumberland counties were able to identify Hodge as a possible suspect.

Officers from both counties, Maine State Police and Auburn police went to the Auburn hotel where they arrested Hodge. He had about $35,000 in cash when officers took him into custody.

King said Hodge has multiple warrants for burglary and theft related offenses in Idaho, Georgia, Florida, Missouri, Oklahoma, North Carolina, South Carolina, Colorado and Arkansas.

His next court appearance will be Oct. 4 in Alfred Superior Court.
