DURHAM — A garage at 178 Swamp Road was destroyed by fire Tuesday night.

The detached building, used as a workshop, was fully ablaze when firefighters arrived at about 7:30 p.m., Fire Department spokesman Joe Lemont said Wednesday morning as firefighters readied to clear the scene.

No injuries were reported.

Crews stayed on scene past midnight to fully extinguish the flames. Shortly before 7 a.m. Wednesday, firefighters returned to scene because the fire had rekindled, Lemont said.

By 9:45 a.m., flames were out. Town excavators were called to the scene to knock down any hot spots.

Four other towns had assisted with water supply and Auburn covered the station, Lemont said.

The cause of the fire was not known Wednesday morning. The Maine State Fire Marshal’s office was called in to investigate.
