RUMFORD — Donald Miller is returning to the Rumford Police Department, according to Chief Stacy Carter.
The Board of Selectmen voted unanimously Thursday to approve Miller’s appointment.
Carter said Miller worked as a full-time officer for the department from 2009 to 2015, before leaving to join the Lewiston Police Department.
“He has proven to be a very good officer and we are thrilled to have him back,” Carter said.
Carter added that Miller replaces Matthew Desroches, who resigned to accept a position with Regional School Unit 10.
The timing of Miller’s rehire is good for the 12-person department because police Officer Austin Couture will be leaving to attend the criminal justice academy later this month.
Officer Brad Gallant will also be leaving soon with new K-9 Niko to participate in a training program where the dog and handler will learn to work as a team in crucial areas of specialty police work.
In other business, Selectman Mark Belanger asked that, if Mexico is willing, both towns ask their voters in the November referendum about the issue of regionalization “to get a feel for what people want.”
He said that if people are favorable, ideas that might be considered could be a recreation facility and/or a public safety facility between the two towns.
Town Manager Linda-Jean Briggs announced Deb Laurinaitis, finance director, had reached a milestone by working for the town for 30 years.
Laurinaitis said: “I feel really blessed. I can’t believe it’s been 30 years. It’s gone by really fast. I really enjoy the people I work with.”
Last week, with other employees looking on, Laurinaitis, wearing steel-toed boots and a firefighter’s helmet, celebrated her 30 years with the town by climbing out 55 feet on the town’s fire ladder.
The board also unanimously:
- • Reappointed Jen Kreckel to one-year term as town attorney.
- • Reappointed Jane Shuck to three-year term to library board of trustees.
- • Reappointed Jolene Lovejoy to three-year term on the Rumford Water District board.
- • Reappointed Stefanie Wilson to three-year term on the Med-Care board.
- • Appointed Richard Coulombe to one-year term as town plumbing inspector.
