Greene fire Chief John Soucy said the fire was called in at 11:05 p.m., and the house at 20 Riverview Terrace was engulfed in flames when crews arrived.

Black smoke was coming out of the garage, and some of the contents inside were salvageable, but the rest of the home was destroyed, Soucy said. He said the house was insured.

The residents of the one-story house — two parents and their son — were home at the time of the fire but escaped safely.

One of their two pets perished in the fire.

Soucy said the fire was under control by 11:45 p.m.

A cause had not been determined as of Tuesday night. The fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

The Turner, Leeds, Monmouth, Wales and Sabattus fire departments assisted in battling the blaze.

The American Red Cross said Tuesday it had been assisting the family since Monday night.
