SCARBOROUGH — Reginald “Reggie” B. Thorne, 89, of Rumford passed away peacefully Sunday, Aug. 5, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, supported by his loving family.

Reggie was born Jan. 25, 1929, in Portland. He is the son of Charlotte Dunham Thorne and Blair E. Thorne. Reggie was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Gerald Thorne; and his sister, Shirley Thorne Davis.

Reggie was a graduate of Stephens High School, Class of 1947. He was lovingly married to Joan Lanteigne for 58 years. They remained happy together until Joan’s passing in 2013.

In high school, he enjoyed working for his father’s oil business, and participating in football, basketball and track, and at one point held the Maine high school record in javelin.

Reggie was a veteran of the U.S. Army stationed in Berlin, Germany. He attained the rank of corporal before returning home to continue working in the fuel business. He remains a lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion. Reggie loved his job, loved the art of the deal and taking care of his customers to make sure they had heat on a cold winter’s night. He worked in the oil business until his retirement well into his 70s. Reggie embodied the saying, “A man who loves his job never works a day in his life.”

Reggie enjoyed cooking, family gatherings and parties with his family, which includes daughter Tammy Chiasson and her husband, Dennis, of Standish; son Danny Thorne and partner, Lynn, of Michigan; daughter Nancy Parent and her husband, John, of Mont Vernon, N.H.; and son David Thorne and his wife, Cindy, of Steep Falls.

It is rumored that Reggie invented the turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce sandwich. At the very least, many rides home after visiting Gram and Bumpa were fueled by these sandwiches, or other goodies packed into a small cooler.

Reggie was affectionately known as Bumpa to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed oil truck rides and attending sporting, club and school gatherings with all of his grandchildren: Matthew, Standish “Eric” and Katie Chiasson; Jacob and Amelia Parent; and Ethan, Haley and Nick Thorne; great-granddaughter, McCailla Millett; and great-grandson, Emerson Chiasson.

Reggie was well cared for by the staff at the Fallbrook Woods Living Center memory care unit for many years, and more recently by the excellent staff at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. Any donations should be directed toward Hospice of Southern Maine, 180 U.S. Route 1, Scarborough, ME 04074, or www.hospiceofsouthernmaine.org.

Joan and Reggie will be buried together at the Maine Veterans Cemetery in Augusta.

Reggie was loved by his family and friends, and liked by all. His happy, helpful and caring soul will be missed, yet happily remembered. Save travels, Bumpa!
