JAY — A boil-water order has been issued after a contractor for Central Maine Power struck a water main Thursday morning on Jay Hill on Route 4 while installing a utility pole.

The Jay Village Water District was still making repairs at about 3 p.m., and expected water service to be restored later Thursday.

Superintendent Mike Wells issued the boil-water order until further notice for all customers on Main Street/Route 4 from Lambert Street north to the top of the Old Jay Hill Road in the Jay Village Water District, including Lambert Street, Allen Street, Chick A Dee Avenue and Cessna Lane.

CMP contractors had previously worked with representatives of the water district and Jay Sewer Department to mark water and sewer lines before replacing poles, according to Juanita Washington, who works in corporate communications for CMP.

It was the second to last pole that was to be installed, she said.

The boil order does not include Belmont Drive, Summit Street or Skyline Drive.

All customers on the streets that lost water must boil for at least a minute all tap water they plan to drink, use to brush their teeth and make ice cubes.

After the water is boiled, it can be put in the refrigerator.

Once the damaged water main has been repaired, the district is required to bring samples to a laboratory in Augusta to be tested for E.coli and coliform bacteria, according to Wells.

The district will make an announcement when customers can stop boiling water.
