The driver lost control of a car and hit a utility pole, cracking it at the base, on Birch Street in Lewiston on Tuesday evening. According to a witness who knew the occupants, a young man was teaching his mother how to drive at about 6:30 p.m. when she lost control going around a sharp curve in the road. The young man was not injured but the woman was taken to a hospital to be evaluated for abdominal pain. Her name was not immediately available. Utility crews were called to repair the pole.
