100 Years Ago: 1918

At the point where the Maine Central railroad crosses Hampshire Street in Auburn, an old and dingy lantern hangs on the telephone pole. The light that it gives out is just enough to make darkness visible. This is one of the most important railroad crossings in the city and it deserves a powerful electric light.

50 Years Ago: 1968

The Taylor Pond Yacht Club ended its 1968 season with a very successful clambake, at which Joe Marsden was chairman. A feature of the season-ending program was the presentation of awards by Commodore Alex Holman, Sailing Instructor Sally Aldrich, Racing Chairman Joe McGuckian and Junior Yacht Club Commodore Billy McFadden.

25 Years Ago: 1993

The Rural Community Action Ministry, which is based in Leeds, will hold its annual meeting on Sept. 13 at the Wales Presbyterian Church with a potluck supper at 6 p.m. preceding the business session. Doug Dunlap, a professor at the University of Maine at Farmington, will speak on volunteerism. He has recently returned from Russia with a group of UMF students who went to that country to assess human services offered there. The public is invited to attend the meeting and each one attending is asked to take a casserole or salad to share. The Rural Community Action Ministry is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to meeting the needs of low-income people in the towns of Buckfield, Canton, Greene, Hartford, Leeds, Litchfield, Livermore, Monmouth, Sabattus, Sumner, Turner, Wales and Wayne.
