AUBURN — A 34-year-old man was charged Wednesday in connection with a report of gunshots fired in downtown Lewiston in July.

Quentaris J. Leonard of 135.5 Bartlett St. in Lewiston was indicted by an Androscoggin County grand jury on a charge of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, a felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

He is scheduled to appear in 8th District Court on Friday, where he is expected to enter a plea.

Police said Leonard and another man had been arrested after several people reported hearing gunfire early on the morning of July 7. Witnesses told police they heard at least five shots near the corner of Bartlett and Walnut streets in Lewiston.

Police spent the morning looking for a victim after finding what appeared to be a blood trail and other signs shots had been fired.

Police said it was not clear if the blood trail had resulted from a shooting or another altercation, and police were not certain the trail was blood or another substance.
