The Central Maine Power project for a transmission line the width of the New Jersey Turnpike through Maine’s western hills and mountains is nothing but a boondoggle. It wants to build the line to carry hydropower from Canada to Massachusetts, theoretically to alleviate Massachusetts customers’ electric bills (i.e., to make more money). Vermont and New Hampshire have already rejected similar projects because of environmental concerns, and Maine should definitely do likewise.
The power line would cut through the Kennebec River gorge, the Appalachian Trail and 115 wild streams. Maine’s environment and wilderness areas are a major source of livelihood through tourism and hunting.
Maine officials should just say “no” to the ecologically destructive project that offers no benefits to Maine.
