OXFORD — The annual Oxford County Fair kicks off Wednesday with the traditional Agricultural and Conservation Day. Hundreds of students from throughout the area are expected to attend.
The musical headliner is the Marshall Tucker Bank that will perform Saturday night.
New events this year include a mini horse pull at 1 p.m. Saturday, a Farmer’s Pull at 6 p.m. Thursday and a Fireman’s Muster at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Hebron Fire Chief Jim Trundy, an an officer with the Oxford County Agricultural Society, said the muster will be held on the Demolition Derby Field.
“Hopefully this will be something we can continue,” Trundy said. “It will showcase their skills and hopefully they can provide some entertainment for the community.”
The idea for a muster came during a brainstorming session by the directors to increase fair attendance, he said.
“I’m willing to give it a shot,” Trundy said he told them.
At least half a dozen teams have registered, he said, including Paris, Vocational Region 9 in Mexico, Lovell, Harrison and Norway. Six-member teams will compete for a trophy in events that include dry hose, wet hose and ball squirt at the Demo Derby Arena.
Trophies will be awarded for first, second and third place for each event and one to the overall winning team.

Agricultural and Conservation Day runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will focus on habitats.
“This program has brought components that focus on science, math and social studies for the students,” coordinator Jeannie Federico said in a written statement. “The fair will be passing out bags to all the children with many educational tools and there are about 80 educational booths.”
Other events include steer and ox show, horse pulling, 4-H shows, he-man contest, apple pie contest, Woodsmen’s Day, Community Day, Demolition Derby and Smokey’s Greater Shows.
Admission prices are: Wednesday, $1; Thursday, $5, free for 5 and younger; Friday, $8, free for 5 and younger; Saturday, $10, free for 5 and younger.
Parking fees are Wednesday, $1; Thursday and Friday, $5; Saturday $10.
Fair officials said the walk-in gate will be closed this year. There will be a new gate and parking at the Family Fun Field
