MEXICO — Selectmen voted 4-0 Tuesday to hire Nick Young as a full-time police officer.

The decision supported Police Chief Roy’s Hodsdon’s recommendation for a position he’s been trying to fill for more than 18 months and one he’s been filling himself.

“He’s from Carthage. He’s local, lives here and wants to work for us,” Hodsdon said.

Young has served as a reserve officer for the department since May.

“He’s been doing a fabulous job. I think he’s earned it,” the chief said.

Hodsdon said Young won’t have to undergo mandatory training at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy until August 2019 and therefore the department can budget for that the following year.

The cost of the 18-week program is about $4,500, which covers books, food and ammunition.

“That will give him a year on the road,” Hodsdon said. “I’ve always found that the more experience they have before they go to the academy, the better chance of success. They have a better understanding of the academy and what to look for.”

Young, a 2013 graduate of Dirigo High School in Dixfield, graduated this year from the criminal justice program at Husson University in Bangor.
