CANTON — The Canton Historical Society will host a talk titled “Building and Funding your Community Group” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, in its building at 25 Turner St.

The speaker will be Christopher Schario, executive/artistic director of The Public Theatre.

On the topic of fundraising, he will discuss what works and what doesn’t; how to obtain personal gifts, corporate foundation sponsorships and grants; and advice on holding events, auctions and raffles. He will also provide information on connecting an organization’s mission to the needs of the community by designing a practical program.

Additionally, Schario will discuss developing a representative board based on an organization’s demographics, social and economic makeup, and connections to wealth; filling roles such as educational liaison, legal adviser; and reaching beyond the board/staff’s friends and family.

This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Doors open at 6 p.m.

The Canton Historical Society is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization devoted to the preservation and celebration of Canton’s heritage and history.
