It has been a stressful experience to watch the Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Brett Kavanaugh. The lack of transparency, masterful dodging of questions on his rulings and opinions on civil rights, all come together in a defining moment for the country. A professor of clinical psychology — Christine Blasey Ford — has accused Brett Kavanaugh of assaulting her years ago. She said, “I feel like my civic responsibility is outweighing my anguish and terror about retaliation.”

We can all recognize the immense amount of scrutiny that comes with accusing a powerful figure, especially a federal judge.

I am inspired by Dr. Ford’s choice to speak out. As a registered nurse and a union member, I strive to improve the well-being of my patients. There is always fear of retaliation when speaking up about issues. People continue to do it because they are fighting for the safety of patients and the dignity of working people.

I hope that an independent investigation takes place. Sen. Susan Collins should take the allegation very seriously, be on the right side of history and vote “no” on a nominee who shows nothing but contempt for workers and women.
