Kevin Cochran was presented the Quilt of Valor on September 3 in honor of his service to his country.  He served in the U.S. Navy from 1984-2008 as an electrician on the ships USS Koelsch, USS Dewert, USS Jack Williams, USS Obannon, USS Ingraham, USS Arleigh Burke and saw a good part of the world—Scotland, the Persian Gulf, South America and the East and West Coast as well as Hawaii during his 25 years of service, discharging with the rank of Lt. Commander.  The Members of Quilts of Valor, a national non-profit volunteer organization, make and present these beautiful handmade “lap size” quilts to current and former members of the military in recognition of their service.  Mr. Cochran’s quilt was made by members of the QOV sew group in Hall County, Georgia’ called “On Eagles Wings” where Judy Purdy is a winter resident and a member of the group there, she summers here in Weld.  She took on this project as Weld no longer has an American Legion, which is where the group gets the names, and wanted to honor the veterans who grew up and served from Weld, her summer home!  So far, she has honored, besides Kevin, Ernest Druan, Fred England, David Hutchinson Edmund Hutchinson, Lawrence Lee, Linda Lee, Joan Masterman and Bernard Vining, plus two members of the Weld American Legion when it was active from Carthage.

The leaves are beginning to turn as I write this and, in a week, when this is in your Franklin Journal the “reds” will probably be brilliant on the mountains and in nearby fields.  Get out and go for a fall ride and enjoy the fall color if you can.

Sean’s comments at the beginning of the Weld Enterprise;

 Spring 2002:  As this letter goes to press, people here in town are readying yards and gardens for the coming summer.  Flags around Weld continue to fly high and proud.  Several new families from away have moved to Weld in the past year.  There is still snow on Tumbledown and wild turkey sightings have become as common as moose sightings.  And at the Weld Historical Society, we are preparing for yet another busy and entertaining year.  We encourage anyone with an interest in the history and heritage of the community to take advantage of all the programs and events going on this summer.  One frequently heard (and frequently quoted) comment is “What do you do up there for entertainment?”  It’s true that the nearest movie theater is miles away and to cheer on professional sports teams, you must head for Portland or Boston.  As a small, closely knit community, we seem to have developed the ability to make our own fun; We gather for a cup of coffee in the morning and ring the church bell on an early July midnight.  We hike mountains, fish streams and go on adventurous scavenger hunts.  Some people pass through Weld quickly on their way to someplace else.  We wish them well but feel sorry for them at the same time.  They will never have the chance to experience and appreciate the wonder of being a part of our community.  How lucky we are.
