POLAND — The Board of Selectpersons on Tuesday evening reviewed a proposed ordinance that would provide additional property-tax relief to people 70 and older.

Executive Assistant Nikki Pratt said the Property Tax Assistance Ordinance would benefit about 60 residents, saving them about $300 each.

The ordinance will be reviewed by the town’s attorney. It was drafted by the Senior Tax Assistance Committee formed this past summer.

Former selectperson and committee member Janice Kimball wrote in a letter to the board, “We were able to review ordinance templates of similar sized towns together with property tax fairness credit data specific to Poland residents age 65 and over. The proposed ordinance offers additional property-tax relief to those seniors 70 years of age or more.”

Qualifying applicants must have had their primary homestead in Poland for at least 10 consecutive years and must have received a refund under the Maine Property Tax Fairness Credit.

In other matters, selectpersons are requesting Town Manager Matthew Garside and Pratt to review the agreement with the Auburn Water and Sewerage Districts. The 2011 agreement included conveying and extending water to Poland along Routes 122 and 26 through public water mains and associated facilities that were installed in 2006 to provide water to Poland Spring Water Co.

Recently, questions have been raised about the cost of water supplied to the town and what can be done to encourage residents and businesses to hook into the water mains.
